For anyone looking to truly cast a sober judgment on their self read Dunning's book "Self Insight." It turns out most of us believe we're above average. Somewhat logically, people who are below average have an incredibly difficult time sizing themselves up, whereas people truly above average have the ability to perform mental gymnastics and see a truer representation. Unfortunately, that true representation is still not as great as they think it is. Ouch. Dunning puts us in our place.
But the up side is that once you know where you stand in the most real sense, the better chance you have of correcting abhorrent behavior and moving forward.
By the way, research from this book and others proves that feedback is only good if it's timely and concurrent. Feedback given after the fact, even a day later, is much less useful.
