I'm currently perusing Borders at Southcenter and just picked up the latest Wired and Economist magazines. I'm really considering buying subscriptions in the near future, but I have certain doubts that still cause me to put my foot on the brake:
Digitalization of all information.
I can read both magazines for free online, so why pay? Maybe to make myself feel superior by being able to brag to all my friends that I have subscriptions. But this isn't the real reason at all. I don't believe that reading these magazines makes me smarter, or necessarily even more informed. Nope, the love of reading just makes me busier - not smarter - than you. After all, arming myself with a surface-level knowledge of a subject is dangerous and risky. I could stumble upon (gasp!) someone who actually knows their shit and be in REAL trouble.
Anyway, at the moment, pecuniary reasons prevent me from latching on to these magazines for anything more than an infrequent diversion. Looks like I'll be sticking with the internet for a little while longer...
