Before you read my review, I have to warn you: I love Wall-E. A lot. When reading this, keep in mind that I had ridiculously high expectations for this film, and it has not only surpassed those expectations, but lapped them several times.
Let the lovin' begin...
Wall-E is art. It is philosophy. It is religion. Never has there been so little dialogue for a movie that says so much. It is a lesson in life itself. And life, ultimately, comes down to humanity's capacity to love.
In the future where Wall-E takes place, we find ourselves staring at a genuine anachronism: a life with a personality. Yes, in this future, mankind has found itself more sedentary than ever. In fact, we don't leave the comfort of our anti-grav Laz-E-Boys. It is Wall-E that saves humanity from itself. And not surprisingly, it is through the power of love.
You see, Wall-E is a reflection of our past. A time when humans cared more about each other and the green world they inhabited more than consumerism and business. As humans became more robotic, Wall-E became more human.
It's easy to see why we fall in love with Wall-E. He captures humanity in its most innocent form: childhood. Wall-E is a child. His curiosity, his innocence, they are like that of a child. We watch him discover things and we discover ourselves in the process. He captured our imagination and our hearts. We discover what it means to be human again -- the little things, not technology of stuffWall e teaches eve what it means to love and at the same time he teaches us how to love as well. In the end, we all echo the captain's cry: "I don't want to survive. I want to live!"
In the end, it is amazing how funny, cute, and downright serious (thematically) a movie can be with only a few computerized blips and boops. It is easily the greatest science fiction romantic comedy of all time, and it has now dethroned Beauty and the Beast as the greatest love story in the pantheon of Disney. Love, even from a robot, conquers all in this story.
A few points:
-Wall-E's humanity juxtaposed with the lack of humanity on the Axiom
-Feminism: EVE is no slouch; this girl is tough
-Symbolism/biblical allusion that Earth's "resurrection" comes from the womb of Eve/woman
-So many motifs: environmentalsim, health, anti-monopoly/big conglomerates/overconsumption of Earth's resources, etc.
-A warning for our own future (to the point of hyperbole)
My love for Wall-E barely
